Explanation and Implications for Future Teaching
I chose this artifact for these standards because this text set project required students to complete a variety of instructional strategies for each book. I also included creative, enjoyable activities for students to complete in order to get a deep understanding of the material, making connections in real life. All of the texts included are part of middle childhood reading levels and enhance learning for all students.
In my Content Area Reading class, I had the opportunity to create a text set project. This project is composed of middle childhood level reading books that I have selected myself. The theme I chose to do was Dogs. I chose 5 books and wrote the APA citation, interest level/genre/content area, how I would introduce it to my class, a summary, and a follow up activity for each one. This benefited me by creating unique ways to introduce texts to my students and get them motivated & interested in reading. After reading the texts, I included a fun activity for students to do to connect the stories to real life. For example, one of the books I chose was Marley & Me by John Grogan. I would ask students to bring in a photo of their own pet and tell the class a time when they misbehaved or did something bad like the dog, Marley, did. I also did three activities for students to complete for three out of five books that were included. These were an anticipation guide, sketch to stretch, and story pyramid. I can use these three activities in my own classroom. I really enjoyed this project, as it was a unique way to get students excited about reading and learning about a variety of different themes.
